Emotional Eating and Binge Eating Therapy

Understand what you are truly hungry for—and build a life you no longer need food to escape from.

You may know exactly what you are “supposed” to eat. You may have followed diets, tracked food, promised yourself that tomorrow would be different, and still found yourself turning to food when you felt stressed, lonely, angry, exhausted, or overwhelmed.
Emotional eating is not evidence that you are weak or undisciplined. Often, food has become a reliable way to soothe pain, create comfort, numb difficult feelings, reward yourself, or briefly escape the pressure you carry. The relief is real—but it may be followed by guilt, shame, physical discomfort, and another promise to regain control.
At Dunn’s Counseling Services, therapy goes beneath the eating behavior. Together, we explore what the food is doing for you, what triggers the urge to eat, and what emotional needs have gone unheard or unmet. The goal is not to take away your comfort without giving you something healthier and more sustaining in its place.

How therapy can help

Therapy begins with curiosity rather than judgment. We identify the situations, thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and relationship patterns that precede eating. You learn to separate physical hunger from emotional hunger and to recognize the deeper longing beneath the urge. We may work on emotional regulation, self-compassion, boundaries, perfectionism, stress management, grief, trauma-related patterns, and the beliefs that keep shame alive. You will develop practical ways to pause, understand what you need, tolerate urges, and respond to yourself without punishment. This is not diet coaching or a weight-loss program. It is therapy focused on the emotional and psychological patterns connected to eating. When appropriate, care can complement support from your physician, registered dietitian, or eating-disorder specialist.
