Therapy for Life Transitions, Grief, and Rediscovering Purpose

When the life you knew changes, you may need more than a new plan—you may need space to discover who you are now.

Some losses are obvious. Others are rarely recognized by the people around us: the end of a career chapter, a changing relationship with an adult child, retirement, an empty home, declining health, a friendship that faded, or the decision to set aside a dream you worked hard to build.

A major transition can leave you grieving not only what happened, but also the future you expected and the version of yourself connected to it. You may feel sad, restless, lonely, untethered, or guilty because you believe you should be handling the change better.

At Dunn’s Counseling Services, therapy offers room to acknowledge the full meaning of your loss. You do not have to rush toward acceptance or force a positive lesson. Together, we can honor what mattered, address what hurts, and gradually make space for purpose, connection, and possibility.

How therapy can help

Grief does not follow a tidy timetable. Therapy gives you permission to tell the truth about your experience, including feelings that may seem contradictory: relief and sorrow, love and anger, hope and fear. We explore what the loss represents and how it has affected your identity, relationships, routines, and sense of safety.

As you are ready, we identify the values, strengths, relationships, faith or sources of meaning that can support you now. We may work on rebuilding daily structure, increasing genuine connection, making decisions during uncertainty, and developing a future that does not erase what came before.

Rediscovering purpose does not mean replacing what was lost. It means allowing your life to grow around the loss and recognizing that new meaning can coexist with grief.
