Therapy for People-Pleasing, Perfectionism, and Self-Worth

Your needs do not become less important simply because you are good at taking care of everyone else.

You may be dependable, thoughtful, accomplished, and deeply attuned to what other people need. Yet you may have become so practiced at being who others need you to be that you are no longer sure what you want, what you feel, or where your limits are.

People-pleasing and perfectionism are often attempts to stay safe, accepted, valued, or beyond criticism. They may have helped you succeed, avoid conflict, and earn approval. Over time, however, they can leave you resentful, anxious, exhausted, and disconnected from yourself.

At Dunn’s Counseling Services, therapy helps you understand these patterns without shaming the part of you that learned them. You can begin replacing approval-seeking and self-criticism with internal trust, self-respect, and choices that reflect your actual values.

How therapy can help

Together, we explore where you learned that acceptance had to be earned and what you fear might happen if you disappoint someone, make a mistake, or put yourself on the list. We identify the inner rules driving your behavior and test whether those rules still serve the life you want now.

Therapy may include practicing assertive communication, tolerating the discomfort of setting limits, challenging all-or-nothing thinking, and developing a kinder internal voice. You will learn to notice your needs sooner and make decisions from your values instead of fear, guilt, or anticipated judgment.

The aim is not to stop caring about others or lower every standard. It is to care without disappearing and to pursue excellence without making perfection the price of self-acceptance.
